It involves physical exercises in the gym and is preceded by the 6-minute Walking Test.

The 6-minute Walking Test is the initial step of the programme and is carried out to evaluate the intensity of the programme itself and to teach the patient to assess their own abilities.
This test is key to evaluate the benefits and the improvement after the programme.

It consists in calculating the distance the patient can walk in 6 minutes. Important parameters are:
  1. The distance walked;
  2. The patients’ self-assessment of their abilities;
  3. Heartbeat, arterial pressure and respiratory rate;
  4. Oxygen saturation in arterial blood.
During rehabilitation and after obtaining the doctors’ approval, some patients receive two collective programmes a day under the surveillance of the physical therapist. Each programme lasts from 20 to 45 minutes.
Exercise machinery includes:  stationary bikes, treadmills, pedal keyboards for non-ambulant patients who need therapy in their rooms, ankle weights, obstacles (cones, sticks, etc.).

Collective courses are also held to discuss topics like cardiac risk factors, nutrition, anxiety and stress management, how to keep exercising after being discharged , etc.
At the beginning and at the end of the programme, each patient is assessed according to the Barthel index, one of the most popular tools for physical assessment. attivita cycletteThis index gives a general idea of the patient’s ability to carry out everyday activities. The patient is also scheduled for a cardiac specialist visit to evaluate variations in their cardiac performance, the reduction in the damage caused by the disease, the effect of pharmaceutical therapy, the restoration of biological data and the treatment of comorbidity and complications.
 The cardiologist also considers the data provided by the physical therapist and the ECG, the results of  frequent echo-cardiographic tests and the cardiac respiratory tests.

Suggestions on how to maintain good health, how to manage pharmaceutical therapy  and when to schedule check-up visits are given. Then, the patient is discharged.


What happens when the patient is discharged?

When patients are discharged, they may:
  1. Be entrusted to the Outpatient Rehabilitation Unit of the Clinical University Centre in Verano Brianza
  2. Be sent home and entrusted to their GP
  3. Be trasferred to long-term hospitalization centres or hospices.
